Cyberpunk 2077: A Journey from Turbulence to Triumph

Posted by Bindy Kay on 29th May 2024

Cyberpunk 2077 was initially released on December 10, 2020, for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game launched with tremendous hype but quickly faced a wave of backlash due to severe technical issues, especially on previous-generation consoles. These problems led to its removal from the PlayStation Store and the initiation of a refund program across all platforms, even for retail copies.

Despite the rocky start, CD Projekt Red did not abandon Cyberpunk 2077. The company released numerous updates, addressing technical issues, adding new content, and introducing fresh features. Over time, the game evolved significantly, and its popularity was boosted by the well-received anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and the impressive expansion pack, Phantom Liberty.

Now, three and a half years later, CD Projekt Red has officially completed the development of Cyberpunk 2077. As of February 29 of this year, 17 developers were still working on the game's final updates. According to CD Projekt's latest public data from April 30, the entire development team has now shifted to other projects.

This doesn’t mean the end for the Cyberpunk universe. CD Projekt Red has already announced a sequel, known as Project Orion. Currently, 56 developers are working on this new project, up from 47 in February. However, the majority of the company's resources are now focused on Project Polaris, the next installment in the Witcher series, which boasts a team of 407 developers.

For those unfamiliar with the code names, Project Polaris is the fourth chapter in the Witcher series, set to begin a new saga. This game will mark CD Projekt Red’s transition to the Unreal Engine 5. The company has stated that the pre-production phase will conclude soon, with full production slated to start later in 2024.

Additionally, 39 developers are working on a Witcher multiplayer spin-off, codenamed Project Sirius, while another 20 are laying the groundwork for a brand-new IP, known as Project Hadar.
